Ernest Borgnine, born Ermes Effron Borgnino, dies today, Sunday, July 8, 2012 at the age of 95. Probably best known to most of us at Commander Quinton McHale from the 1960's television show McHale's Navy, to my kid’s generation as Mermaid Man on the show Spongebob Squarepants, and to my parents’ generation from the 1955 film “Marty” where he won an Academy Award. Borgnine died in Los Angeles California, he will be remembered by many fans spanning many generations.
McHale’s Navy, even today, I consider one of the best television shows that ever came out. I first watched reruns with my dad (who also passed away this year) and now I watch it with my children. Cmdr. McHale and his crew on the PT-73 took us on many adventures. The show originally ran from 1962-1966. Borgnine took a big chance, as an Academy award actor to do television. Even today for many actors that means the death of their bit time cinematic careers. For Earnest Borgnine it propelled him to cult status for many generations to know and laugh. Today you can catch the series on DVD and I recommend that you get it. You will laugh and laugh and laugh. (The 1997 film, to many a bomb is worth a watch.)
To my kid’s generation, Borgnine is known as retired superhero Mermaid Man with his sidekick Barnacle Boy on the Spondgebob Squarepants series. The character only appears from time to time just like a super hero when needed they are there to save the day.
As a Hollywood actor, Borgnine won the most coveted award the Academy Award for his performance in the movie Marty. Marty a single man living with his mother does not believe he can find true love. Everything is stacked against him, his friends, his brother, and his mother. When Marty meets a nice girl, the pack conspires for him to dump her for many reasons. Finally at the end of the film Marty wises ups and goes after his love.
Other great roles that Borgnine played were From Here to Eternity (1953), The Dirty Dozen (1967), The Wild Bunch (1969), Magnum P.I. (1982) and so many more spanning a career of over 60 years. You will be remembered.
