Spiral (Movie)

by James Harper

Spiral is about the guy at work that you want to avoid at all costs. If he is coming down the hallway, you will turn and go in the exact opposite direction. Spiral is a thriller/horror film about a telemarketer, Mason (played by Joel Moore), that has clearly gone over the edge. And the title is a little misleading; Mason doesn't spiral anywhere, he is messed up from the first shot of the movie till the very end. There is no point where he is even close to functioning like a normal person. Mason's only true passion, besides listening to jazz, is that he paints women, and then they DIE. Of course he does have a little trouble getting women to sit for him, but for the sake of this movie, he finds one. Joel Moore co-directed (along with Adam Green who previously directed Joel in the gorey Hatchet) and Joel also co-wrote this movie. From the results I think Joel is probably a stronger actor than writer, the basic plot and screenplay are fairly weak. The direction on the other hand, has elements that sometimes work well, kinda. The way some of the shots are set-up, the use of color, the use of music in certain scenes, and some of the transition shots are probably better than this particular plot deserved, and help pull the movie up a notch so there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. The movie is not boring to watch, and the acting is not bad considering what they had to work with. I do think the little parts of the movie are definitely better than the sum of the parts. Ultimately the movie leaves you feeling cheated because after a long buildup. There is no real payoff.
