Check Out Canadian Folk Rock Heroes Shred Kelly's First Stateside Single "Going Sideways"

The Musebox today announced the February 19 U.S. release of Sing to the Night, the award-winning album from Canadian folk rock heroes Shred Kelly. Thanks to their high-energy and engaging live show, Shred Kelly have crafted their own sound, called “stoke folk.” Sing to the Night won Album of the Year and Best Live Act at the 2015 Kootenay Music Awards. Shred Kelly also won the award for Best Music Video for “Sing to the Night”at the 2015 Western Canadian Music Awards. The band will support the release of Sing to the Night by showing off their must-see live show during a two-week tour of the U.S. in March.

According to Exclaim Magazine, “Sing to the Night is a huge step forward for this young group.” Tim Newton, Sage McBride, Jordan Vlasschaert, Ian Page-Shiner, and Ty West have amplified the traditional sound of folk music with a more contemporary approach. Their reputation as a captivating live band has earned Shred Kelly sold-out shows across Canada and performances at some of the Canada’s premier festivals.

Sing To The Nightfeatures their signature claw-hammer banjo riffs, layered ambient synth, powerhouse rock, and lush vocal harmonies. Newton explains that the album’s title track “Sing to the Nightcame from a combination of late night songwriting and group jams. I’d often find myself at 3:30 a.m. singing to the walls of our garage rehearsal space.”

According to McBride, Shred Kelly differ from other folk or folk rock bands because “we play at such a fast tempo and play around with instruments typically outside of the folk genre. Playing a synth and a banjo together sounds ludicrous to most folkies, and playing a banjo in a rock band sounds ludicrous to most headbangers. It has, however, worked very well for us.”
