Rock
‘n’ roll isn’t dead. It just needed a good, swift kick in the ass. The Pretty
Reckless arrived right on time for the job.
Their
second full-length album and first for Razor & Tie, Going To Hell, debuted in the Top 5 of the Billboard Top 200 upon release. Meanwhile, in addition to garnering
over 13 million-plus YouTube/VEVO views, the first single “Heaven Knows” became
2014’s most successful song at Rock Radio, clinching #1 at Mainstream Rock for
12 consecutive weeks. After its follow-up “Messed Up World” seized the top
spot, the quartet—Taylor Momsen [vocals, guitar], Ben Phillips [guitar], Mark
Damon [bass], and Jamie Perkins [drums]—made history, becoming the second
female-fronted group to enjoy two straight #1 hits at the format. The last time
this feat was accomplished happened in 1984 with The Pretenders.
The
mainstream embraced The Pretty Reckless’s raw, raucous, and real rock ‘n’ roll.
Rolling Stone praised the album, and
they performed at 2014’s iHeartRadio Festival alongside the likes of Coldplay,
Iggy Azalea, Lorde, Paramore, and more. Over the course of 2015, they’ll
support Nickelback on a sold out world tour. To date, their album and single sales
clock in over a million.
Still
think rock’s dead?
Produced
by Kato Khandwala, Going To Hell
represents not only the band’s evolution but the genre’s as well. “We just want
to make songs that move people,” exclaims Taylor. “That doesn’t change. It felt
great to complete something we’re happy with, but immediately we wanted to make
more. Creating is an addiction, so the journey is really a creative process. We
constantly need to beat what we did before.”
The
record’s third single “Follow Me Down” slithers from an acoustic intro into a
strangely sexy refrain. It begins soft, and then hits hard, dangling a
forbidden fruit in the process. “’Follow Me Down’ basically started as a blues,
folk song,” she goes on. “It tells the tale of a young girl and her
relationship with an older man—one of my favorites on the album. It came
together quite easily and was actually one of the first songs we cut. There are
a lot of elements to the intro. That sets up the narrative of the song, a
sexual encounter, and a rural atmosphere. Laws are being broken, and the story
kicks in.”
Meanwhile,
the story of The Pretty Reckless truly starts with Going To Hell. They’ve broken down the walls, and now they’re
building a legacy of their own.
“This
is the first record that sounds close to what we really are,” Taylor affirms.
“It’s the first step in the right direction. Going To Hell is all about being where we want to be, and we want
to stay there.”
