Weekly Video Review (Dec 21) featuring Sam Smith and Maddie & Tae
“Lightning Strikes” by GoldieBlox (feat. Emily Haines) | OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO: GoldieBlox is a line of girl empowerment toys aimed to get girls interested in engineering, science, technology, building and math. The GoldieBlox site proclaims, “We aim to disrupt the pink aisle and inspire the future generation of female engineers”.
“Lightning Strikes” is written and sung by Canadian singer/songwriter Emily Haines who is the lead vocalist/keyboard player/songwriter for the band Metric.
This short video is a cartoon featuring Goldie and her friends entering a derby car race. After her car fails she goes back to the drawing board and perseveres until she builds a capable derby car and reenters the race.
While we watch, Emily sings lines like, “So what if I’m not right the first time/So what if I just try 10 more times” and a chorus of, “Go, go go, whatever it takes I know/When there’s a will, there’s a way”.
The music is synthesizer based with a constant thumping and rhythm guitar on the chorus.
Girl power!

This video is featured in black and white with Smith and a group of men and a boy in tuxedos gallivanting through the city streets ending with them doing shots at a bar.
Smith declares that the one he loves is, “Looking down all the wrong roads” and that no matter who they find, “They’ll never love you like I can, can, can”.
This song has a high rise chorus and Smith’s vocals are just as soarinly beautiful.

이효리 (Lee Hyori) - Bad Girls (배드 걸스) MV: Lee Hyori is a South Korean singer dubbed as the “Queen of K-pop”. She started in 1998 as leader of an all girl band called Fin.K.L. and later went solo. 2003 marked her solo debut of her album, “Stylish”.
With surf style guitars this video is a combination of a comic book, cartoonish sound effects and live action blend. It stars with an ambulance pulling up and hospital staff unloading a pregnant woman. The woman dies during child birth and we see the baby as a doll with drawn on, very arched, eyebrows. They child is then handed off to the grieving husband.
The scene moves on to the baby, now a little girl with very arched eyebrows still sitting on the couch as the father brings in his new wife and introduces her to the kid as her new mommy.
From there it’s scenes of the little girl doing bad girl things and growing older, still with the eyebrows, ending in a mug shot.
This song is in Korean with the words, “Bad Girls” in English. You can look up the English lyric translation or watch the video version with subtitles.

Village Girls – Thank God I’m a Country Girl (Official Video): Village Girls is a trio of singers from Italy. I’d tell you more about them but their site is in Italian.
This video and song is a girled up, sped up, dancified version of John Denver’s, “Thank God I’m a Country Boy”.
Uhggg, three girls in the video, so they have to be dressed up in the skimpiest outfits and dance around in the old west. At least it’s boot kickin’ dancing. These girls wind up in a saloon drinking and then getting arrested where this video ends and so do I.

Maddie & Tae - Girl In A Country Song: Oh no, not another video with scantily clad girls in Daisy Dukes. But, wait…no, this song has a message about today’s country males view of a carbon copy stereotype of women.
This is country music duo Maddie &Tae’s first single with the video having been published on YouTube in July of 2014. They stand up for country girls with a chorus, “Bein' the girl in a country song/How in the world did it go so wrong?/Like all we're good for /Is looking good for you and your friends on the weekend/Nothing more”. Ouch. “Yeah baby, I ain't your tan legged Juliet. Can I put on some real clothes now”? Preach it girls.
So, we started out with scantily clad girls and switched to boys dressed up as scantily clad girls being exploited by the girls. Message received.
