Review by Craig Sorensen

Hey, how about some more Nikkatsu mayhem!  This time out though, don’t expect the rampant lunacy of previous installments in the Nikkatsu Roman-Porno series (for those of you just joining us, Roman-Porno is short for romantic pornography).  Yes, Female Teacher is a fairly straight ahead drama.  Of course, it’s not without it’s eccentricities  but the film just doesn’t have that unhinged quality that I’ve come to expect from the series.

Our story concerns a school teacher named Sakiko (Yuki Kazamatsuri of Mosquito on the Tenth Floor) who, while having some morning sex, receives a call from the local police station.  One of her former students has been picked up on suspicion of prostitution and listed poor Sakiko as her contact.  So Sakiko sets out to get to know the girl better and try to understand why the girl would call on her at that moment.  The trail of course (this is Japanese) leads to a sexual assault early in the teachers career.  Sakiko wrongly accused the young girl’s father of the crime and the family was ruined.  Now, Sakiko, wracked with guilt, tries her best to put things right with the family.  Also, there’s lots of paint thinner huffing for some reason.

So, Female Teacher is pure melodrama all the way.  There is still plenty of sex in the film but for the most part this is a pretty tame affair.  I guess I should give them credit for trying to take the subject matter somewhat seriously but I just was not expecting this from the series.  I wanted something a little crazier.  And while the paint thinner huffing subplot was a little weird, it just wasn’t enough to hold my interest.  Don’t get me wrong, I certainly don’t think that it’s a poorly made film, it’s just not what I was really looking for from the series.

The film transfer is up to the standards of the rest of the series.  Like the subject matter of the film, the look of the film is kind of dour.  Everything is just kind of drab looking, very mundane.  It fits the film though and I think that the transfer does a good job of relaying that.  Again, like the other films in the series, the only audio option is the original Japanese mono track.  Of course, you get English subtitles so you can follow along with all the handwringing.
