Leading up to the events of X-Men, X-Men Origins: Wolverine tells the story of Wolverine's epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe whose appearances in the film have long been anticipated.

The prequel to the X-Men movies shows how James Howlett came to be Wolverine. We learn about his relationship with Victor Creed who eventually becomes Sabretooth. Their backstory shows how they grew up together and their special skills in killing and how they fought in various wars. They meet William Stryker and join a team of mercenaries. While on a mission, James Howlett reaches his boiling point and quits the team as he can't continue killing and this puts a rift between him and Victor. After 6 years pass, members of Stryker's team are turning up murdered and when James' girlfriend winds up murdered as well, he is presented with the opportunity to undergo a painful process that will allow him to self heal and also give him and indestructible skeleton and the trade mark claws.
