GEOFF BARROW AND BEN SALISBURY SCORE ALEX GARLAND’S SCI-FI THRILLER EX MACHINA

(The Directorial Debut By Alex Garland)

Ex Machina Soundtrack to be released digitally on Back Lot Music
Physical versions both CD and LP to be released on Invada Records
Release Date: April 7, 2015

Invada records and Back Lot Music announce the official release of Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury composed score to Alex Garland’s Sci Fi thriller Ex Machina.

The soundtrack will be released on CD and vinyl on April 7 in the US in line with the films release in the States through A24.  The film having already been released in the UK has enjoyed rave reviews including Sight & Sound naming it their 'Film Of The Week' and the Guardian describing it as a “dazzlingly good-looking technological thriller”.

EX MACHINA, written by Garland and his directorial debut is a stylish and cerebral thriller staring a trio of rising stars—Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, and Alicia Vikander.

Geoff Barrow is a founding member of Portishead and producer/label owner of Invada Records UK.

Ben Salisbury is a soundtrack composer with over 200 film and TV credits to his name, including the last three of David Attenborough’s "Life Of…" series. The Beyonce documentary/hagiography "Life is But a Dream".

Barrow and Salisbury previously worked together on an unused score for the 2012 movie Dredd (adapted for the big screen by Garland).  When Barrow and Salisbury revisited and started expanding upon this early material they decided to continue writing what was essentially soundtrack music.  The album was eventually released as DROKK; Music Inspired By Mega-City One, an album of
Carpenter-esque dystopian electronica and was released on Invada Records in May 2012.  The love of sparse, electronic soundtracks that has manifested itself in the DROKK project has also led Barrow and his team to license Cliff Martinez’s much-acclaimed "Drive" score for a special vinyl edition on his Invada label.

Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, EX MACHINA.

Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, Ex Machina. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.

Recently speaking to Gigwise of working with Geoff and Ben, Garland explains: “They have an incredibly high quality control level. I think they’re kind of amazing. What they do is they keep you honest, they are pretty fierce”.

Geoff Barrow says, "It's been great for Ben and I to be working with Alex again, and hopefully we have written the kind of score an intense sci-fi thriller like this needs" with Salisbury adding "We wanted to slightly get away from the type of soundtrack album that has a huge track-list with lots of short cues. Instead, we've tried to put together an album of fuller length tracks, by segueing some of our cues and creating a structure and shape that mirrors the film in some way.”

Barrow and Salisbury met over 10 years ago when they both joined a Bristol football team for old men.  After many disastrous games they decided they might be more productive working on a music project together.  Other work commitments kept them apart until late 2010, when the pair met up with a screenwriter to discuss some possible work on a feature film project and a collaborative writing relationship had begun…

The track listing for the soundtrack is as follows:

The Turing Test
Watching
Ava
Falling
I Am Become Death
Hacking / Cutting
The Test Worked
Skin
Out
Bunsen Burner (composed by Cuts)
