Video Reviews for Week of January 18, 2015

Sia - Elastic Heart feat. Shia LaBeouf & Maddie Ziegler (Official Video): This video was published to YouTube, January 7, 2015 and is the follow-up to May 2014’s, “Chandelier”, which also featured Maddie Ziegler as a mini Sia. Maddie, an American child dancer, actress and model, is best known for her appearance on Lifetime’s, “Dance Moms”.

This video also features American actor and director Shia LaBeouf, who plays opposite Maddie.

The song is taken from Australian singer/songwriter, Sia’s album, “1000 Forms of Fear” out now and regarding her choices in actors, Sia, says this on her website “I anticipated some ‘pedophelia!!!’ Cries for this video. All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play these two warring ‘sia’ self states. I apologize to those who feel triggered by Elastic Heart My intention was to create some emotional content, not to upset anybody”.

The video itself is pretty simplistic. A giant bird like cage with a bearded Shia and Maddie fighting in a choreographed way. Tugging and pulling and so forth. Maddie in the same nude leotard as the “Chandelier” video and Shia in nude shorts. At one point, Maddie steps through the bars of the cage and Shia is very upset at this. But, alas she comes back in only to leave another time this time trying to pull him through the bars. The music stops and we continue to see Maddie fighting to pull Shia through and him giving up. This struggle continues in silence for 45 seconds.

Sia’s lyrics reflect on another relationship “biting the dust” and wondering why she “can’t conquer love”. Set to a relaxed beat Sia sings that “you did not break me…but you won’t see me fall apart/’Cause I’ve got an elastic heart”.

Pitbull, Ne-Yo - Time Of Our Lives: American rapper Pitbull (Miami, Florida) got his start in 2002 on a solo track for Lil Jon’s album, “Kings of Crunk” and went on to make seven albums and an EP. The newest one, “Globalization”, has garnered this track in which he teams up with R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer and actor, Ne-Yo, hailing from Las Vegas by way of Arkansas.

This video was published to YouTube Christmas Day of 2014. Just in time for New Year’s celebration as is the theme in the video which stars out with a family fretting over unpaid bills and rent and not being able to party for New Year’s Eve. Then an old lady says that they used to throw a big party to raise the rent money back in the day. Pitbull and Ne-Yo are discussing their money woes outside by the car when he gets a text about a party and they head out.

At 0:41 the music starts with Ne-Yo singing the pre-chorus, “I knew my rent was gon' be late about a week ago/I worked my ass off, but I still can't pay it though/But I got just enough/To get up in this club/Have me a good time, before my time is up/Hey, let's get it now”. Then he goes on to say he wants, “The time of my life” in the chorus.

Pitbull and Ne-Yo are seen singing in between scenes of a house party dressed in tuxedos, and at the house party. At one point we see a man hovering over a porcelain bowl just before the song kicks into half time. It ramps into gear again then the music stops and the people at the party count down to the New Year in Spanish.

In Pitbull’s last rap of the song he says, “This for anybody going through tough times/Believe me, been there, done that/But everyday above ground is a great day, remember that”.

Demi Lovato - Nightingale (Official Video): From her 2013 and fourth album, “Demi” comes this track, not published on YouTube until Christmas Eve, 2014.

LBGT activist, Demi got her start on the “Barney & Friends” show and is an American actress and singer/songwriter. She’s been on the Disney Channel, Glee and had her own TV Series, “Sunny with a Chance”.

This video starts out with a piano playing repetitive chords that move downward in scale while Demi sings. At 0:47 the other instruments come in dramatically as her voice rises. Scenes of her sound checking for a concert and people coming into the concert play across the screen.

At one point, as Demi sings she wipes a tear away from her eye. The video is made up of more of Demi getting ready for the show, fans going to the show or meeting her and that ilk until she is at the show performing. She has a powerful three octave voice and uses it well in this beautiful tune.

The song is about needing someone to be there for her. Demi sings in the chorus, “Can you be my nightingale?/Sing to me/I know you're there/You could be my sanity/Bring me peace/Sing me to sleep/Say you'll be my nightingale”.

Axwell /\ Ingrosso - Something New (Lyric Video): Axwell /\ Ingrosso are a Swedish group formed in 2014. The two members, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso were previously in another Swedish group together called, “House Mafia” with Steve Angello, a threesome of DJs and producers and were a progressive house music band.

This video is a lyric video so not much going on except lyrics and a black background with computer generated “stuff”. But, wait! At 1:55 a hand forms, then legs, another hand, a torso, chest, then a head. Then we see computer generated faces of Axwell /\ Ingrosso.

Over all this house music they sing of, “we belong to something new”. New start new band, I guess.

Calvin Harris - Outside ft. Ellie Goulding: From Scottish record producer, DJ, singer/songwriter, Calvin Harris’s 2014 and fourth album, “Motion” this song features English singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Ellie Goulding singing on this track. Their second collaboration, this video was published to YouTube November 12, 2014 and is the fourth single from the album.

This dance tune starts out with Ellie, singing on her knees outside a mobile home. Trying to hold on to a relationship that is burned out is what I gather from this tune. Fighting and then being on the “outside” looking in. I could be wrong.

Featuring two couples, Ellie and her drinking, dirt bike riding man and Calvin and his girl, the two couples begin to fight with their mates and have a big blowout. Ellie’s man takes off on his dirt bike riding in a standing position as he pops wheelies and jumps off of things. Calvin’s girl starts throwing things around the house.

At this point Ellie is still outside singing but now there’s a mirror in front of her. Calvin’s dodging objects left and right and Ellie’s mirror shatters. Then Calvin’s girl throws a plate at him and it freezes in mid air at the same time Ellie’s guy jumps his bike and it freezes in mid air above Ellie.

Ending the video we see Ellie and Calvin in a room facing each other with glasses frozen in mid air.
