All That is “ONI” a Metal Force Reckoning
All That is “ONI” a Metal Force Reckoning
CD Review by Aaron Michael Antczak
As I peer into who is “ONI” the opening notes of their latest single “Eternal Recurrence” struck a nerve right off the bat. My first thought… Where.. The fuck.. did these dudes come from? Wait… did I just hear a Synthesized Xylophone? The guitars are dialed in, super heavy but not too muddy and the solo harmonies are spot on. Jake Oni (Front man) powers through the unorthodox verse and chorus sections distinctly. The screams aren’t too heavily layered but can be hard to decipher, after listening a few times you’ll get a feel for his pronunciation.
Next up … “Barn Burner”, just listening to the intro blisters immediately erupted on my fingertips. This song had more “clean” vocals then Eternal Recurrence, keep that shit up Jake! There’s that xylophone again. Johnny D plays this thing with precision and impeccable timing. It’s clear that he’s mastered to integrate it well commanding respect. Every turn on this track Joe Greulich provides the perfect timing and spot on changes to make things happen you can’t begin to anticipate.
“Thrive” is a seamless masterpiece. Insane guitars defying physics as we know it, breaking the rhythm barriers and bringing light to scales I never knew existed.
I continued my journey into the depths of “Ironshore” to get a better feel for what these guys have to say, as a writer/vocalist I’m always trying to “get” the message. I try and pry myself into the cracks to pull apart the underlying motives.
I could go on for days about each individual song but I’ll let you find it on your own. I’ll sum it up like this… If you like bands like The Mars Volta, All that remains, Twelve foot ninja, Sylar, Slipknot and whoever else you can fit into that genre then get your hands on this album. Jake, Martin, Chase, Joe and Johnny couldn’t have summoned a more demonic hellish brand on this album.
