Video Reviews for Week of November 3rd

Leighton Meester –Heartstrings

Actress, Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), has come out with a song reminiscent of a Chris Isaak tune. Heartstrings (album of the same name-October 28, 2014) is basically shots of Leighton singing for the camera with different backgrounds, lighting and effects, about having to “tie her heartstrings” after “saving my own self from all your evil games”.

Kissing Cousins – Cover Me

A haunting tune but, a bizarre video. Maybe I’m just not artsy fartsy enough to get this video. These girls, filmed in black and white are wondering around the inside of a building, walking, crawling, sitting, being dragged, looking in the bathroom mirror, spinning around in a fringed dress, going up and down stairs, looking under bathroom stalls, walking backwards, falling down, getting up and generally look like they are aimlessly wondering and bored to death with a bit of paranoia.

The Smoking Flowers – The Boys of Summer

This Don Henley cover is a slowed down, bare bones sweet rendition with just guitar and vocals. Kim starts the first verse and chorus then Scott’s scratchy voice comes in on the next verse and chorus. Third verse has them both harmonizing on throughout. This is set over home video footage from long ago and now.

Alexz Johnson – Let Them Eat Cake

Set in black and white, we follow the band into the studio for rehearsal. Alexz’ vocals are strong and confident in this tune where the guitar follows her phrasing in “We’ll let them eat…Cake”. Simple guitar, vocals, sparse drums and limited bass this tune has a lot of breathing room with a laid back beat. The video ends with an old time movie credit of the players.

Aerosmith – Dream On

Why is this on here? Isn’t this an old video? That’s what I said. This is actually a remake Boston Tribute with Steven Tyler, Joe Perry and Southern California Children’s Chorus performing with just piano, guitar and the Chorus.

Steven starts off by saying, “This one’s for you Boston”. Set in a nice, high ceilinged, pillared hall and white guitar and piano, images of “Boston Strong” and of the people that passed away in the Boston Marathon bombing are shown. The video traverses between these images and Steven and Joe’s performance.
