A Night with Carl Palmer at Tralf Music Hall in Buffalo, NY on Nov 25, 2014

It is typical for the drummer to be the guy in the back of the stage, that not many people know who he is. At age 64 English born Carl Palmer formerly of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Asia proved different at this show. With having his drum set stage front and guitarist Paul Bielatowicz and bassist Simon Fitzpatrick aside him was an evening of fascinating talent. He brought some talent out on the road with him this year.

Right from the beginning of the show the magic was hitting the skins of listening to the old classics performed by ELP years ago. Throughout the evening Carl made it an intimate evening in the small venue of approximate 400 with telling of old tales of what influenced him in writing of songs or a few funny stories of some of their experiences while touring with Keith and Greg. In listening to his performance brought back so many memories of the “progressive rock’ era while performing and blending in some King Crimson 21st Century Schizoid Man. Not to forget the Aaron Copeland covers of Fanfare For The Common Man (with an amazing solo performance during this song) and Hoedown. The highlight of the evening for me was the full length version of Tarkus and his drum solo that lasted about 8 minutes or so. It was like watching a Ninja fighting an army up there. The crowd was amazed how powerful he was on the stage. Carl was even kind enough to do a meet and greet with the fans afterwards.

I was totally blown away how amazing well he is still playing after all these years in not performing. I am glad I didn’t miss this show and recommend to a venue near you.
