Ugh...so much for hoping the series was taking a turn for the better with Children of the Corn IV. Children of the Corn V is just a mindless, poorly made slasher film that just boggles my mind. Why? Well its because this is the most star-studded entry in the series. Eva Mendez, Alexis Arquette (the male version), Fred Williamson and David Carradine are all in this! How the hell did this script convince these actors/actresses to want to be in this turkey?

Children V opens up with a confusing and silly hook where a boy for no reason walks out to a corn field and sees the green light of He Who Walks Behind the Rows and becomes possessed. He then goes to a farmhouse and levitates a farmer while he is struck by lightning. When the wife appears a bunch of kids with farming equipment attack the wife. This has nothing to do with anything else for the rest of the film and we then get a "One Year Later" scroll. Why does it have to be One Year Later? Just because.

Cut to a bunch of obnoxious college-age kids who are going to spread the ashes of one of their friends (you read that right). As they drive about their car breaks down and they are stuck in this odd little town where a bunch of orphaned children, lead by the possessed kid live at an old farmhouse run by Luke (David Carradine). Finding no way of getting out and with no help from the strange sheriff (Fred Williamson) they take refuge at another farmhouse which just piss off these kids to no end. One of the college-age gals finds out her estranged younger brother may be a part of this clan and with the help of her idiot buddies, tries to save her brother from Luke and the possessed kid.

While the plot and storyline are a joke, it doesn't help that the film seems incredibly cheap with some awful editing and weird camera angles (why is the camera upside down when a car drives by?). While the acting is better than in the other films thanks to a semi-talented cast, they are all given incredibly bad lines of dialog to spout off. One can't wait for these young schmucks to start getting killed off which unfortunately takes forever for that to happen. I will say the Children of the Corn films seem to have gotten progressively bloodier, with some decent throat slashings and chainsaw attacks to make a gore hound at least not racing for the fast forward button. I especially like the effect of David Carradine's head blowing open, revealing this odd creature that spews fire. It made no sense but looked cool.

I have no idea how this entry was able to get these talented actors. Sure, this is Eva Mendez's first film but Alexis Arquette had already done Pulp Fiction and Bride of Chucky and Carradine and Williamson are legends so why did they suddenly choose to do part V? They couldn't have gotten paid much given the low budget. Not sure what is a bigger mystery: why these actors decide to do this film or why do film makers continue to make Children of the Corn movies?
