Smoosh
With two full release albums under their belt Smoosh, the sister act from Seattle proved that they were more than just a hype act from this years South by Southwest Festival. The group is comprised of Asya (Keyboards), Chloe (drums) and occasionally Maia (Bass). The interesting thing about this group is that their current ages are 15, 13 and 11 respectively. They are touring in support of their current release, free to say.
Still in the midst of their musical development they won over a bar crowd comprised of people twice their age. Their music has a kind of an Indy rock feeling with lyrics that read like a young girl's diary.
Asya's vocals are honest and enduring with a pop-ditty feel. Chloe's playing style has the essence of Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) with nuances of Dire Straits; this girl's got chops. When just jamming with each other the girls really dig deep within themselves and convey an enjoyment of being able to share their music to the masses. Look for good things to come from these ladies.

The Pipettes are not Reto, but are reminiscent and respectful of a more repressed time in America's recent history. Originating from Brighton, England, Monster Bobby (guitarist for the group) assembled this 7 member band which features three female vocalists in the tradition of girl groups from the 50's. Why must I be a middle-ager in love?
The three starlets Becki, Gwenno and Rossay, donned in polka-dot dressesm make lovin' fun again. Gone are the sly innuendo lyrics of a time forgone. Now these dames are upfront and downright catty (as in on the prowl). They are the voice of the swooning single gal that is in touch with her wants and needs. In performing the song, Because It's Not Love (But It's A Feeling) the gals clearly state:
I don't want to fall in love
I don't want to see the stars up above in the sky
I just wanna catch your eye
I don't want to be wined and dined
I just want to bump and grind with you here tonight
Because you move so right
With other titles like One Night Stand, Dirty Mind, and Pull Shapes there is little doubt on anyone's mind what they are after. But that doesn't mean that they are completely randy. The focus is to expand upon the many differential aspects of a woman's love and how a boy just may not get it. It's not that they don't need a man; on the contrary they love 'em. It's just that sometimes the singles get crossed and they just want to be strait.
The Pipettes are more than what Garry Marshall did with Happy Days by utilizing a time and palace to non-confrontationally, and sometimes titillating, dynamic of Boy/Girl relationships. These ladies prove that your mother (if you are my age), from the 50's, enjoyed sex; they just didn't have the pipes to say it.
