Flight of the Conchords

by James Harper

Flight of the ConchordsOne of the funniest shows to pop up in some time might slip past you if you don't have access to HBO. "Flight of the Conchords" is about a duo of New Zealanders trying to make it as a rock band in New York City. "Flight of the Conchords" is not only the name of the series, but it is also the name of the same New Zealand band, a folk parody duo. On NPR's "Fresh Air" they described their show as a cross between "The Monkees" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm". This show comes on Sunday evening and doesn't do a bad job of making up for the loss of "The Sopranos". The setup has a lot in common with "Extras" though "Flight of the Conchords" is a smaller quieter show.

The songs are spot-on, delivered with a straight face. And you never know when a song is going to start up. They will be right in the middle of something and just turn to the camera and sing. The most important thing about the new series is that it is funny, gut-wrenchingly funny. They wisely never overplay their hand. The humor is more subdued humor, there is no laugh track, but the timing of the jokes is perfect (P.E. R.F.E.C.T.). It will be fun to watch how the series develops.

The writing is smart and snappy. If you would like a taste of the show there is a clip of "Most Beautiful Girl in the Room" on www.youtube.com (better check it out before someone pulls is off). Also on www.youtube.com is what might be the funniest teaser for any show in recent memory, under "FOTC HBO teaser". The Conchords also did a radio series for the BBC. Did I say the show was funny?
