Review by James Harper

The  Harry Potter crew is back with another film.  This time out, Harry is having a very bad day, no one believes his warnings that Lord Voldemort has returned.  This is a very grumpy Harry.  Die hard Harry Potter fans may be disappointed that some scenes were cut from the book, but overall the movie holds together pretty well.  The movie has an Empire Strikes Back kind of feel to it.  This feels more like a set up for the next movie than a complete chapter on it’s own.  Despite this the movie is never less than interesting and held my attention the entire time.

This movie’s art direction is simply stunning.  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is a gorgeous movie.  Every scene seems to have been thought out with tender loving care.  Many of the shots could be freeze framed, and they would take your breath away.  If you want to see how beautiful a film can look, I suggest you go see this movie.  Within the bounds of the story they have done a great job.

Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry, has this movie almost to himself, as compared to the earlier movies.  The acting in the movie is very solid with a couple of new faces appearing.  A great bit of casting is Imelda Staunton, who starred in Vera Drake,  playing Dolores Umbridge, who is trying to take over the school.  Also Gary Oldman is not on screen a lot, but still makes a great impression as the only person Harry truly trusts.  All of the bit parts are done with care, and this makes for a much more interesting film.  The film has a darker tone than the earlier films, and the movie doesn’t  have a lot of  humor in it, most of it coming from the side characters.   If you have enjoyed the earlier Harry Potter movies then you will more than likely enjoy this one.
