Sweet Spirit and Britt Daniel Premiere Cover of Spoon's "Paper Tiger" with SPIN

Tour with Spoon Kicks Off on 5/17

Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Heartless Bastards) Producing Debut Album
This weekend, Austin's Sweet Spirit will hit the road with Spoon for a run of dates through the western United States. In advance of the tour, Britt Daniel of Spoon and Sweet Spirit have collaborated on a 7" produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Heartless Bastards).

Yesterday, SPIN premiered the B-side single which is a cover of Spoon's "Paper Tiger" from their 2002 release Kill The Moonlight. Harley Brown said, "For this version Sweet Spirit take off faster, harder, and punk-ier, replacing the original’s percussive blasts of distorted air with rapid-fire hi-hats and blasts of ska horns."

'“Paper Tiger” is a song that we’ve always wanted to cover. Andrew [Cashen, co-leader] was attracted to the beautiful melody," says Sabrina Ellis. "He kept talking about giving it the Amy Winehouse beat, Winehouse with the Dap Kings. We learned the song and began incorporating it into our set. One night we had an early show at Hotel Vegas. Britt Daniel happened to be in the audience and we asked him onstage to sing with us. That’s when we whipped out this coked up version of “Paper Tiger.” I don’t know who was more surprised, Britt or the 30 people at the bar."

Earlier this year, the band released their debut self-titled EP via Nine Mile Records.
Known to long-time Austinites for their work in A Giant Dog and Bobby Jealousy, Sweet Spirit proudly strengthens a decade-plus collaboration between writing partners Sabrina Ellis and Andrew Cashen.

Following a performance at the 2015 SXSW Music Conference, Todd Martens of The Los Angeles Times called Sweet Spirit "The musical embodiment of a pep rally, the promising band is all arms-in-the-air shout-alongs." Deborah Sengupta-Stith of the Austin American-Statesman said "Sabrina Ellis is a force of nature. Her voice soars, pierces through swells of sound even when she's barreling into a guitar riff or go-go dancing (which she does frequently and enthusiastically)."

Mike McCarthy will produce their first record, due in summer 2015 on Nine Mile Records.
