Video Review of Nicki Minaj Epic, 16-Minute Short Film - “The Pinkprint Movie.”

Video Review for Week of December 28th

By C. Duke

Beats by Dre Presents: Pinkprint Movie: Nicki Minaj recently released her third album, “The Pinkprint” on December 12, 2014, three days ahead of schedule due to an online leak of the album. This is Minaj’s follow-up to 2012’s, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded”. It has a simple album cover with a black background and a splatter of what looks like pink blush with a thumb print in the middle.

This sixteen minute video features three parts in three songs, but the beginning actually features a fourth. A portion of the song, “All Things Go”.

The video visually starts out like a feature film with credits. You hear a car start from the interior. As Nicki raps you see the camera panning the tops of building as the car drives through the city.

Nicki’s rap is about looking beyond what people say and seeing their intent, cherishing life, wanting a daughter in preschool seven years from now and the 10 year old proposal of her then boyfriend.

Then you see a camera view of traffic and a shot of Nicki driving. The song fades out and Part 1 begins with the song, “The Crying Game”.

A shot of her fiancé outside the car looking agitated and pacing while Nicki waits inside gives way to him screaming an explicit which kicks off the song. Nicki raps and sings in this one as she drives around telling the story of a big falling out between her and her man, leading to a crying game of tears. This, after they were planning a wedding. Shots of Nicki crying begin and in her emotional state she winds up in a car accident.

Part two, “I Lied”, opens with rain pouring down and thunder clapping. This time we follow her fiancé as he drives through the rain soaked streets with Nicki lying down in the back seat with a bloody forehead.

Nicki sings and raps about how she lied to him about her feelings to keep from getting a broken heart. Her fiancé drives her to their home and they wind up caressing and hugging each other. End scene. By the way, this slow tempo song has one of those 80’s sounding electronic cowbells. That sound belongs in the 80’s and should stay there.

Part 3, “Grand Piano” is about the demise of the relationship and begins with stringed instruments tuning and a rolling shot of the grassy ground. An eating utensil taps on a glass and we switch to Nicki at a function in a red dress looking sad as we see shots of untouched food on plates and people around her. Nicki has a butterfly band aid on her forehead. A piano plays droningly and all we see are the hands on the keyboard.

“The people are talking, the people are saying/That you have been playing my heart like a grand piano/So play on, play on, play on” she sings in the chorus. The video bounces around from shot to shot showing past scenes of them fighting, outdoor scenes and current scenes of them at the function and with her pulling her hand away from Mr. Fiancé.

About midway some violins enter the sonic landscape and screen. Then we have a lone violin playing beautifully while Minaj sings and the scenery gives way to the outdoors and the man playing the piano…is her man. The solo violin comes back in and plays over the scene of Nicki and said beau getting in the car and leaving the function to which we move to a screen filled with the violin playing and progressing to it’s last bowed note. Enter the noisy silence of crickets and credits.

An exquisite, heartfelt long play video, I end this review feeling moved and sad about past breakups and a new appreciation for Ms. Minaj.
